Boys and Girls Club

Nurturing Tomorrow's Leaders

Support for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) is one of the Rotary Foundation’s most enduring and cherished initiatives. In 1927, a generous bequest from a Rotarian helped the Jelleff Recreation Center in Georgetown become the Boys and Girls Club of Washington, DC. Thanks to this permanent endowment, the Rotary Foundation contributes to the BGCGW capital fund for renovations and infrastructure. That enduring partnership builds a brighter tomorrow for more than 12,000 children in the greater DC region each year.

A Rich History of service

Building Futures Since 1886

From its humble beginnings in 1886 as the Newsboys and Children’s Aid Society, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington is a symbol of community-led transformation. In the early 1900s, the organization became the Working Boys Home and Aide Association, and widened its services to include all boys in the Georgetown neighborhood.

In 1927, the Rotary Foundation of Washington, DC established a board of trustees, signaling the transition into the Boys Clubs of Washington.

Over the next three decades, through multiple name changes and the construction and renovation of several headquarters in Georgetown, an enduring partnership emerged between this local club and the Rotary Foundation of Washington, DC.

By 1953, the original Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington was rooted firmly at is present location at 3265 S Street, NW, and proudly bore the name of Mr. Frank R. Jellef, Rotarian, local businessman and President Emeritus of the Boys Club of Washington.

The year 1973 marked a significant milestone on our expansive timeline

The Boys Clubs of Washington opened their doors wider, inviting girls to become members with equal standing, fully embodying our commitment to inclusivity. This spurred a significant name change in July 1981: the Boys Clubs of Washington evolved into the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, a name that resonated with the club’s enhanced direction and enriched aspirations.

From humble beginnings above a grocery store to 26 locations throughout the National Capitol region, the Rotary Foundation of Washington, DC has stood arm-in-arm with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington.

Committed to crafting a more positive future, together we instill hope, inspire change, and transform lives.
